High School Basketball Playoffs Set

The Elk Grove Unified School District is well represented in the upcoming CIF Sac-Joaquin basketball playoffs……….Four local high schools are in the Division I bracket-------#2 Sheldon will open against the winner of the Turlock-Edison play-in game------#4 Pleasant Grove plays Tracy-----#6 Franklin will host River City---and #12 Monterey Trail will play at Kennedy……..In Division II Cosumnes Oaks is the #4 seed and will host Bethel-----and Elk Grove is the #10 seed and will play at Whitney….And in Division III Florin is the #6 seed and will host Vallejo…….All first round games will be played Wednesday, February 25th.

League Title For Cosumnes Oaks

The Cosumnes Oaks High School boys basketball team has won the Capital Valley Conference championship with a 72-70 win over Antelope last night in a game played at Oakmont High………The Wolf Pack was forced into a one game playoff for the league title after losing to Ponderosa Monday night………..Cosumnes Oaks was led by Eric Toles with 33 points as they improved their overall record to 20-7----12-3 in league play………The Wolf Pack now waits for tonight’s playoff announcement from the CIF Sac Joaquin Section to see where they will open the post season.  

Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation

The Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation targets adults who purchase alcohol for people less than 21 years of age.  Under the program, a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol.  The minor indicates in some way he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.

3 Arrests In Mailbox Thefts

It’s been a problem in Elk Grove but now police have made three arrests after a series of mail box thefts…..20 year old Joseph Ryan, 20 year old Keri Southwood, and 22 year old Leonard Velasco now face federal felony charges of mail theft, bank fraud,  aggravated identity theft, and fraud related to access devices and if convicted they could all face up to 5 years in prison and fines up to $250,000…….Elk Grove Police give much of the credit for the arrests to citizens who after more than 50 community mailbox thefts provided information that helped lead to the assists……If you see someone breaking into a community mailbox call the Elk Grove police at (916) 714-5115 or the U.S. Postal Service’s 24-hour hotline at (877) 876-2455.

Suspect Named In Elk Grove Murder

The murder of Marissa Peneda De Almanza occurred back on November 5th and now Elk Grove police have named 38 year old Moses Valdez as the suspect …….Almanza’s body was discovered by her husband in her apartment on the 9200 block of Franklin Blvd…….EGPD believes Valdez is a gang member and had been placed on post release community supervision before the murder-----he allegedly goes by the nicknames “Demon” and “Crazy Moe”……Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call EGPD at 478-8060.  


Toddler Story Time

Toddler Story Time is happening today at the Franklin Community Library in Elk Grove………Children ages 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers are invited to spend a half hour singing songs, hearing stories, watching finger plays, and listening to rhymes from Ms. Julia---the second half hour is play time with age appropriate educational toys….…….It’s a way to build early literacy skills and provide interaction with other children……It’s from 10am to 11am at the Franklin Community Library 10055 Franklin High Road in Elk Grove.

Chicks In Crisis In Elk Grove

Chicks in Crisis is an agency that does many things-----it helps women dealing with difficult situations from abusive relationships to financial hardship and also children who get caught in the middle of it all......Now Chicks in Crisis has secured a two acre property in Elk Grove that will be used as a resource center to help with placement of unwanted pregnancies, kids and young foster adults in tough situations--- However, the house on the property is in shambles.
