Letter to Martin Luther King Jr.

Letter to Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Martin Luther King Jr.,

Thanks Sir, for making your dreams heard and for acting on them.

I have a dream, too. I don't want to be looked down on because of my race or gender, and thank God that I rarely am (to my knowledge), but I know that there are so many people who are. I have a dream, too, sir. A world filled with love, laughs, and peace. Aha, what a lovely painting that would be. A lovely, hopeful, unrealistic depiction of this world.

Excuses, Excuses

I am a pretty reflective person, always asking myself “Why?” Not only do I reflect on my actions, but those of other people as well. I frequently catch myself trying to find a good reason why we stop ourselves short of what we can achieve. Think of all the possibilities, but sometimes I feel as if I am making excuses for myself and others.

On Sunday, September 11, The Vizcaya Pavilion & Mansion’s ballroom provided an elegant setting for the 2011 Debutante Ball season Champagne Sip event, hosted by the Eta Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  Each year, the members of Eta Gamma Omega host this elegant affair to honor the parents of prospective debutantes and escorts for supporting and encouraging their daughters’ and sons’ participation in the many activities necessary to ensure a successful ball season.

This year’s event chairman Jillian Spears, expressed that as one of the culminating activities of the Debutante Ball Season, the Champagne Sip serves not only to highlight the importance of the role of the parents, but it is also the Eta Gamma Omega chapter’s way of saying 'thank you’ to those community members who have volunteered to participate as presenters in workshops and career panels, and who give support throughout the season.

The event began with a welcome from Spea
