Dad breaks windshield to save son from hot car | News
ELK GROVE, CA - Javier Arrieta knew firefighters were on their way, but he also knew it was a very hot day and very hot inside his car. He could see his 1-year-old Connor starting to sweat and he knew he had to do something.
So Arrieta took his fists and forearms and smashed the front windshield of his car, first on one side, then the other. Then he pulled the smashed wall of glass out and unlocked the car. His wife Corrine rushed to free their baby.
Everybody was all right. Connor was fine while dad only had scratches on his forearms.
When the firefighters got there, the couple said they were pretty surprised.
"At first they thought he had taken something to break the window," said Corrine.
Isidoro Martinez of Mobile Glass Masters was also surprised when he came out to repair the window. He said smashing a windshield like that is dangerous and Arrieta could have been badly cut.
"I was cut," he said, "Just cleaning up the glass!"
Arrieta works as a physical trainer at California Family Fitness in Elk Grove. Fellow employees were kidding him, he said, about "going green," like the comic book character the Hulk.
But for Arrieta and his family, all's well that ends well.
"For our son, I'd do it again," he said.
