Make A Difference Day Sacramento County | Events
On October 27, 2012, libraries across Sacramento County will be partaking in the national Make A Difference Day 2012 volunteerism effort.
Partnering with News10, local Sacramento libraries and Friends of the Library volunteers will be on hand at branches throughout the county to clean, repair, restock, or otherwise improve local facilities.
Following is a list of all the libraries in Sacramento County who will be participating, along with a brief description of their Make A Difference Day activities:
Arcade - Make paper bag ghosts, trick or treat bags, and enjoy some treats, too, at Arcade's Halloween Crafts Event at 2:00 p.m. All ages are invited, and costumes are encouraged!
Friends of the Arcade Library will have a membership table from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Being a Friend is a low-cost, high-impact way to show your support for libraries.
Donate new children's books to be distributed at library events.
Arden-Dimick - Spend some time cleaning picture books, or at one of our other tasks, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Belle Cooledge - Help us grow our Friends membership by 25 new friends! Friends of the Belle Cooledge Library will have a membership table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Carmichael - Donate new or gently used children's books between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Books may be added to collections, used as give-aways during reading events, or sold by Friends to raise funds to support the branch
Central - Visit the lobby table from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to donate books or money, or to join the Friends. Central teaches computer classes that cover everything from PC basics to creating a resume. Every $10 donation purchases a workbook for one of those classes.
Clean our 5 floors worth of bookshelves any time from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There isn't a shelf that couldn't use a good dusting!
Colonial Heights - You are invited to our first annual Community Harvest Festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is a collaborative event between library staff and the Junior League of Sacramento and an opportunity to learn about the Sacramento Public Library's first Community Teaching Garden
Courtland - From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., pick a task from the jar, do it, and then write about it on the "good deed" wall. Tasks include: Clean library books; Read a book to someone; Help someone find a book; Help someone request a book; Email a Friend from the library; Look for the library's next program and tell a friend; Pick up trash inside and outside library; Wipe off table tops
Del Paso Heights - Help us set up for our big Halloween program between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.: Put together treat bags of candy (we supply the candy); decorate squares in our giant Candyland game with a Halloween theme; help decorate the branch for the big Halloween program; dust and clean every shelf. Even if it's Halloween, we don't want real cobwebs in the corners!
Elk Grove - Friends of the Elk Grove Library are having a book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every book purchased helps the Friends fund the Elk Grove Library's programs and materials. Consider joining the Friends to help out even more.
Fair Oaks - Friends of the Fair Oaks Library will have a membership table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a donation bin for new or gently used children's books.
Franklin - Friends of the Franklin Library will have a membership table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a donation bin for new or gently used children's books.
Galt - Visit one of our 3 great programs that day: 1) Spanish/English Babies & Toddlers Story time at 10 a.m.; 2) Read-to-the-Dogs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and 3) an Artober school-age children's program at 2 p.m., where kids will create "Glow-in-the-Dark" pictures with fabric paint onto black T-shirts.
Isleton - Give someone else the chance to enjoy a book you enjoyed and help the library at the same time. Bring us your gently used books between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. as we prepare for a Delta-wide book sale.
We need volunteers to re-label books between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. No previous experience needed!
Martin Luther King, Jr. - Join our regular crew of teen volunteers between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.. You may be asked to pull books from a list, dust shelves, clean tables and chairs, clean books, clean the front and back patio areas, create a bulletin board, make Bookmark Corrections, or clean computer screens.
McClatchy - The lantana bushes on the south side of the building are looking wild, and are reaching into the narrow alley that provides access to our outdoor book drops. The lantana needs to be cut back and trimmed. Also, ivy is growing along the north side of the building that should be removed. If you have the tools and the know-how, we could use you that morning between 9 a.m. and noon!
The outside of the building could use a cleaning/power wash. Dirt, spider webs, and plant matter have collected and impact the attractiveness of this stately old home. If you have the tools and the know-how, we could use you that afternoon between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.!
McKinley - "Clean Up: Inside and Out" 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We have various tasks available inside the library and out in the park. Come visit and we'll put you to work!
North Natomas - Dust, vacuum, clean tabletop surfaces, computer screens, and keyboards between 9 a.m. and noon. Please bring dusting cloths and cleaning cloths for computer screens and keyboards.
Enjoy a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo with the Natomas School of music from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
North Highlands-Antelope - From 10 a.m. to noon, look through the children's picture books and pull out any that are dirty, torn, stained or have been loved to pieces. The Friends of the North Highlands-Antelope library plans to purchase new furniture for the children's area, and we want the books to look nice there, too.
North Sacramento - Donate new or gently used children's books between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will also gladly accept any monetary donations. Books may be added to collections, used as give-aways during reading events, or sold by Friends to raise funds to support the branch.
Orangevale - Help us rearrange our children's book section between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to make the children's books more accessible. We need strong backs - you will be bending and stretching and moving a lot of books!
Rancho Cordova - Volunteer opportunities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. include: relabel Geek Out at Your Library cards; "Dust off your library" by dusting, cleaning and straightening every book shelf we have; pull out books in bad condition; place books that have been returned back onto library shelves.
Rio Linda - We need someone who can set up a large, sturdy pot with flowers or other plants in front of each of the two library entrances any time from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have a green thumb, and the supplies (really big pot, soil, plants, tools) we need you to brighten our doorways!

Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven - Donate new or gently used children's books between and/or shop our shop our book store from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every book purchased helps the Friends fund the branch's programs and materials. Donated books may be added to collections, used as give-aways during reading events, or sold by Friends to raise funds to support the branch.
Southgate - Book and Friends Fund Drive table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will accept donations of new or gently used children's books in English, as well as Vietnamese, Spanish and Russian. Monetary donations are alos greatly appreciated.
Come see a Kendama Battle, from noon - 3 p.m. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced of all ages are invited. Participants get a chance to win a CUSTOM Kendama, donated by a local artist. Don't know what Kendama is? Come learn about this game of coordination and skill
Sylvan Oaks - Clean picture books between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Picture books regularly need cleaning after spending time in tiny hands!
Participate in the "Big Beautiful Branch Clean-up" from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dust shelves, clean corners, make this place sparkle! We've got the supplies; bring your energy!

Valley Hi-North Laguna - From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. help with the preparatory work for a story time craft, or clean picture books. Picture books regularly need cleaning after spending time in tiny hands!
Friends of the Library will staff a membership table from noon to 2 p.m. Learn about the Friends, join the Friends, donate money to the Friends, and/or donate new or gently used children's books. Being a Friend is a low-cost, high-impact way to show your support for libraries.
Support the Sacramento Public Library's "One Book Sacramento" program by joining Elaine Elinson, co-author of "Wherever There's a Fight", from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to hear stories of the courageous efforts to win the vote for women in California. One of the MANY programs we offer to people of all ages!
Walnut Grove - Make the children's picture book collection sparkle as you clean book covers from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Picture books regularly need cleaning after spending time in tiny hands!
Make someone's day with a gift of a seasonal "Marzipan Skull" that you created yourself at our 1 p.m. program. One of the MANY programs we offer to people of all ages!
