Cosumnes college parking lot incident ends with police pursuit

SACRAMENTO, CA - A driver was taken into custody after allegedly trying to run down a college campus police officer.

The incident took place on the Cosumnes River College campus on Center Parkway in south Sacramento Thursday morning.

According to Los Rios Community College District police, the officer had stopped the driver for committing several traffic violations.

As the officer got out of his vehicle to approach the driver, the driver backed his vehicle into the patrol unit before turning toward the officer on foot, witnesses said.

The officer was not hit. The incident triggered a police pursuit. The chase came to an end five minutes later at Power Inn Road and Elise Avenue, police said, when another Los Rios officer pulled in front of the pursued vehicle, causing it to crash.

No one was hurt.

Suspect in Galt eviction shooting taken to jail

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Galt man police say shot and killed an animal control officer has been released from a hospital and booked into jail. 

Joseph Francis Corey, 65, is on a no-bail hold on murder and assault with a deadly weapon booking charges.

Corey had been in police custody at a Sacramento hospital since Thursday after a 17-hour standoff came to an end. 

The standoff began when police say Corey fatally shot an animal control officer called to retrieve pets believed to have been left behind when Corey was served an eviction notice at his home in Galt, a suburb of Sacramento.

Authorities say the officer - 45-year-old Roy Marcum - was killed when Corey fired a shotgun when Marcum and a bank employee knocked on the door.

ELK GROVE, Calif. - A mother grieving the tragic loss of her 12-year-old son is dealt another huge blow when her cell phone, containing her son's last pictures, was stolen while she is visiting his memorial.

Edward Hill, 12, was run over and killed by a trailer pulled by a truck Sunday afternoon.

The last 48 hours for mother Diane Hill have been a daze.

"I can't think. It's surreal," Hill tearfully said. "I can't imagine not being able to see or touch him again. I don't think its hit yet."

While Hill was in her darkest hour and visiting a memorial that had been set up for her son, someone stole her cell phone, which contained her last pictures of Edward.

Elk Grove man accused of student loan fraud

SACRAMENTO, CA - An Elk Grove man and his brother have been indicted on 12 charges of defrauding banks of more than $200,000 in student loans.

Mordechay Altit, 33, is accused of supplying names of students, their Social Security numbers, incomes and college attendance or attendance planes in order to receive the funds, according to the federal indictment. Altit used the names of Sacramento State University, Harvard Law School and Yale School of Medicine in the loans applications.

The indictment alleges Altit wrote checks for more than $19,000 he received in student loan money to his brother Shay Din Altit, 44, in Los Angeles.

An FBI and IRS investigation of the two men led to the indictment.

Elk Grove police investigate rape attempt at softball complex

ELK GROVE, CA - A woman fended off a man trying to sexually assault her at the Elk Grove Regional Park softball complex parking lot Sunday evening, say police.

The 37-year-old woman was reaching into the back seat of her vehicle when a man came up behind her and tried to rape her, according to Officer Chris Trim.

"It's a crime of opportunity. Her back was to the suspect. That was the crime the gentleman was looking for," Trim said.

The woman fought off the assailant, pushing and punching him until he ran off in a northbound direction through the park, Trim said.

The victim described the attacker as a white or Hispanic man, approximately 30 to 40 years old with short, messy dark hair. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 165 pounds. She said he had "5 o'clock shadow" beard growth and wore a black sweatshirt.

Police said park officials have ramped up security by adding more patrols around Elk Grove Regional Park.

4 Sacramento men busted in Redding marijuana stop

REDDING, CA - A tip led Redding police to the discovery of 300 pounds of packaged pot in the vehicles of four Sacramento-area men traveling from Trinity County to the Capital City Sunday night.

Redding police Cpt. Jon Poleski said officers pulled over a U-Haul pick-up truck and a white Nissan Altima in town limits just before 7:30 p.m. A K-9 officer alerted human officers to the U-Haul and a search of the pick-up truck uncovered the marijuana, he said.

Taken into custody was the driver of the U-Haul, Chue Chang, 43, of Sacramento.

Officers searched the Nissan and found packaging material, vacuum-sealing equipment and a hand-held radio identical to one found in Chang's pick-up, Poletski said.

Man dies after being shot in south Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, CA - A man died Saturday afternoon due to complications after being shot earlier that week.

Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos said the victim, Alexander Roderick was at a park near Florin Road and Elk Grove Florin Road when he was shot.

When officers arrived at the scene, Roderick was rushed to UC Davis hospital where he died five days later.

Ramos said there was conflicting information from friends, who did not cooperate with deputies.
