Nephew suspected in shooting death of Herald man

HERALD, Calif. - A man was arrested Tuesday evening in connection to the shooting death of his uncle that happened Sunday afternoon outside of his home.

Jerry King, 31, the victim's nephew, was arrest around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau, Sgt. Jason Ramos said.

Neighbors who live in the area said for the past few days they saw detectives investigating at the home. Maria Alvarez said she saw the suspect numerous times and the arrest was surprising.

"We would see him and he would wave every once in a while," said Alvarez.

In the initial report, King called the sheriff's department Sunday around 4:30 p.m. and reported hearing gunshots outside of his home on the 13000 block of Purvis Road; when King went outside, he saw his uncle lying unresponsive in the driveway, he told the sheriff's department.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a 50-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to his chest, Ramos said.

During the investigation, detectives found a firearm hidden in some brush behind the home; they believe it was the weapon used to kill the man.

Ramos said King had a strained relationship with his uncle and that was the catalyst and motive for the crime.

King was booked into Sacramento County Jail for murder, Ramos said.

The victim's identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
