American Public Works Association Honors Elk Grove’s Cedar Kehoe as Manager of the Year

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento Chapter recognized Cedar Kehoe as one of three outstanding individuals who represented the best management professionals in public works for 2011 at an annual awards dinner on Thursday, May 19. 

Before starting her current position as program manager with the City of Elk Grove six years ago, Kehoe was the general manager at the San Francisco Solid Waste Transfer Station.  She was instrumental in the development of the nation’s first Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility and managed the recycling of 59 percent of the waste received at the facility. 

“Cedar inspires excellence and dedication in the public sector,” said APWA Sacramento Chapter President Matt Brogan.

Elk Grove sports complex workshop set for May 4

ELK GROVE - A Special City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 4 for a workshop to provide information and gather feedback about a future sports complex in Elk Grove. The meeting will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. and the workshop starting at 6:30 p.m., at the city council chambers located at Laguna Palms Way.

The Elk Grove City Council provided direction in March on the layout concept of the future Elk Grove Civic Center, including a sports complex. This public workshop will allow participants to assist in establishing a vision for a future sports complex and provide input into what amenities the complex may include. The meeting will also include a panel discussion from various Elk Grove sports leagues.

ELK GROVE - Local bloggers, business owners and residents gathered together Thursday evening to celebrate the area's first "Elk Grove Tweet Up & Community Meet Up" event at Strikes Bowling on Laguna Boulevard.

The event brought together folks who may have interacted with each other on Twitter, Facebook, Elk Grove Online or other social media websites, in efforts to meet face-to-face in a fun, interactive environment.

Using Twitter hashtag #elkgrovetweetup, participants Tweeted about the experience, organized by co-founders Rodney Blackwell (@ElkGroveCA) and Krista Guerrero (@getkdm).

Elk Grove Chamber to host Small Business Expo May 11

ELK GROVE - The Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce presents the 2nd Annual Elk Grove Small Business Expo, Wednesday, May 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Wackford Complex in Elk Grove. The public is invited to join us to visit local vendors and enter for a chance to win one of many prizes. The event is free of charge.

The Small Business Expo is designed to provide a forum for local businesses to market their companies to local consumers and help them understand the current status of the economy. Valuable information will be provided to help them survive and thrive in this difficult economy, and to give them the opportunity to network with some valuable resources and potential clients.

The schedule includes eight breakout sessions throughout the day on relevant and important issues such as social media, effective networking, time management and values-based decision making by some of the area’s most knowledgeable and influential speakers.

CalVet to provide career, benefit workshops for veterans April 2

ELK GROVE - About 30,000 veterans are expected to leave military service and return to California this year. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is committed to helping veterans transition from the battlefront to the home front.

CalVet will hold free workshops on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 10 a.m., designed to provide veterans with the necessary skills to assist in the transition from military duty to civilian life. The workshops will be held at 2216 Kausen Drive in Elk Grove, and will focus on job searching, resume building, interview skills and dressing for success. CalVet will also offer workshops to educate veterans about financial aid, scholarships and veteran benefits. The workshops are open to all veterans.

California is home to 2 million veterans, the largest veterans population in the United States, with this number expected to grow by 30,000 annually.
