Sutter's Fort "Hands on History" Event this Saturday!

Sutter's Fort "Hands on History" Event this Saturday!

In the winter of 1846-1847, wagon travel across the Sierra Nevada was a dangerous proposition and more than 80 emigrants became trapped in the Sierra snow.  Of course we know them as the Donner Party, but the travelers included individuals and many different families. Did you know that the snowbound emigrants lived in two separate camps almost five miles apart? Sutter’s Fort was their destination and became their only hope of survival.

Emeritus Senior Living “Free Rent” Talent Contest Winner Announced

Non-profit organization 3in4 Association, its spokesperson Dr. Marion Somers, and Emeritus Senior Living announced the winner of its national senior talent competition on Friday, Nov. 9 – who promptly donated his prize to a neighbor in need. Nat Brown, 73, competed against 300 seniors nationwide to win a year-long stay at an Emeritus senior living community – worth $50,000. 11 runners-up received week-long stays. A self-taught musician who lost his eyesight as a teenager and has played with Little Richard, Tina Turner and Etta James, Nat wanted to share his prize with someone truly deserving, so he donated it to a  local senior with little family and few belongings.  View Nat’s performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMktzJU5K00

Continuing a popular annual tradition, the historic site will offer a special Halloween program based in fact but with a decidedly creepy twist.  Amid the glow of campfire, daring visitors will go on guided tours through the darkened rooms and hear unusual and intriguing tales of how some of California’s early pioneers perished throughout history.   Some even  believe many of the rooms at the Fort are still haunted by the spirits of past inhabitants.   For advance tickets or more information about “The Haunted Fort” or other events and activities at Sutter’s Fort SHP, call 916-323-7626 or visit www.suttersfort.org.
